Parental Care Nursery and Primary School, Bushenyi, and King’s College Buddo have emerged as winners of the National Junior Schools Debate Championship and the National Senior Debate Championship, respectively.
The competitions—the 5th Junior Championship and the 13th Senior Championship—were held at King’s College Buddo in Kampala under the theme “My Education, My Environment, My Ethics.” King’s College Buddo, which did not participate in last year’s competition, clinched the senior title after edging out Mbarara High School in a closely contested final.
Meanwhile, Parental Care Nursery and Primary School, Bushenyi, won the junior category trophy for the third consecutive year. Isaiah Ashaba was named Overall Best Debater for the second year in a row, while Joy Precious Asingwire, also from Parental Care, emerged as the best female debater.
The chief guest, Dr. Patricia Achan, Deputy Inspector General of Government, described the competition as one of the most successful editions.
“We must commend the organisers because debate sharpens learners’ minds. Winning the competition for the third consecutive time shows that the staff and pupils of Parental Care Nursery and Primary School, Bushenyi, are doing an extraordinary job,” she said.
The Executive Director of the National Debate Council (NDC), Gasta Kakaire, thanked King’s College Buddo for hosting this year’s championship.
He noted that Parental Care Nursery and Primary School, Bushenyi, has been consistent in participation and victory over the past three years.
Desmond Tayebwa, the head teacher of Parental Care Nursery and Primary School, Bushenyi, said the school successfully defended its title after defeating KY Board Primary School in a highly competitive final. Outstanding speakers were also recognised, with Ashaba Isaiah, Asingwire Joy Precious, and Ninkusiima Leah—all from Parental Care Nursery and Primary School, Bushenyi—winning gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively.
The senior category motion that led to King’s College Buddo’s victory was:
“The Lwera Swamp has continued to degrade. A Chinese investor intending to lease it for rice growing has proposed permanently constructing the swamp if it is sold to him. Debate the consequences of this development.” The junior category debated the motion:
“Between a leader with ideas and a leader with money, who makes better leadership in a school setting?”
