The deplorable state of roads and low electricity connectivity have emerged as top concerns among voters in the West Nile region, as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary campaigns gather momentum ahead of next year’s general elections.
Across the 13 districts of West Nile, including Arua City, more than 80 percent of the road network has deteriorated, rendering some routes impassable, especially following the heavy rains that began in early July. Voters say the poor condition of roads is negatively impacting their livelihoods, with frequent vehicle breakdowns and soaring transport costs for both people and goods.
During ongoing NRM campaign meetings, residents have demanded urgent and deliberate government action to upgrade and maintain the region’s road infrastructure. Voters are also calling for an increase in electricity connectivity, which remains below 50 percent, despite the extension of the national grid to the region. They argue that without reliable power, productivity and economic development remain stifled.
Other key demands include improved healthcare through the provision of essential drugs and expanded access to clean, piped water in small towns and growing urban centres. According to residents, poor road conditions, limited electricity access, high poverty levels, and inadequate health and water services will strongly influence how they vote in both the primaries and the general elections.
Former Ayivu County MP Bernard Atiku, who is seeking a return to Parliament, believes addressing these issues requires competent and informed leadership.
Zoe Bakoko Bakoru, a former Minister of Gender and now contestant for Ayivu East, says accountability is key. She urges voters to question and demand performance from their elected leaders.
Geoffrey Feta, the incumbent MP for Ayivu East, expressed optimism that the 12th Parliament would push for improved services in West Nile’s key sectors.
As the NRM primary campaigns intensify, the message from the electorate is clear: candidates must address the region’s persistent challenges in infrastructure, electricity, healthcare, and water if they hope to earn voter trust and support-URN.
