Kamuli Chief Magistrate’s Court, has committed a 32-year-old man Sowedi Egumbye to the High Court on charges of aggravated robbery.
Egumbye, a resident of Bugaga B, Nawantumbi Ward, Nawanyago Town Council, Kamuli District, of robbing Shilikya Paul of 5 million Shillings and property worth 9 million Shillings.
The suspect was arrested in an intelligence-led operation on Tuesday at his residence. It is alleged that Sowedi and others at large allegedly robbed Shilikya after giving him counterfeit dollars. The victim, who had been lured from Kireka, was promised US dollars in exchange for Ugandan currency.
The victims travelled to Nawanyago to meet the suspects but were instead robbed of cash and a bag containing phones.
On Tuesday, the suspect appeared by presided over by Aisha Nabukeera, the Chief Magistrate and was committed to the High Court for trial. He was also remanded to Kamuli Prison.
According to Michael Kasadha, the Busoga North spokesperson, it has been common practice for Egumbye and his group to lure and fleece victims, particularly from Kampala and surrounding areas.
In 2023, the same group attacked and damaged Nawanyago police cells in an attempt to rescue a colleague who was in custody for distributing counterfeit money.
