Relocation of Kitgum Bus Park Delayed

The relocation of the Kitgum Bus Park to a temporary site at the defunct Kitgum Airfield has hit a snag due to logistical challenges. Despite the entire demolition of the old bus park, vehicles are still loading and unloading passengers from the old site.

The Kitgum Municipal Council had announced plans to relocate the bus park to pave the way for the construction of a modern, multi-billion shilling facility under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID). The relocation site at the defunct Kitgum Airfield in Pandwong Division was chosen to minimise disruptions to transportation services in the area.

The council had initially set a deadline for the relocation to take place before July 1, 2025; however, this has not happened as buses, taxis, among others, are still loading from the old site despite all the structures there being completely demolished.

According to Richard Okwera Ojara, the Mayor of Kitgum Municipality, they have yet to establish a temporary police force, sanitary facilities, and the need for essential services like lighting at the new site.

Ojara said that the council is working to address these issues and expects the relocation to be completed soon. “We expect by July 22, 2025, the complete reallocation will have taken place since we have partnered with Kitgum Taxi Operators and Drivers Association (KTODA) to execute this”. Ojara revealed.

He further mentioned that once this is done as the council will expect no passenger service vehicles to load and offload along the roadside or anywhere else apart from the main bus park. “All loading and unloading will be done at the designated point, and we are going to begin levying hefty fines on these Passenger Service Vehicles (PSV) that will violate the directives,” Ojara warned-URN.
