Heavy rains disrupted the mobilization launch of the opposition People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) party in Rukungiri District suffered a setback on Thursday. The launch was attended by acting party president and Kampala Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago, party spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, Western Region vice chairperson Nicholas Thadeus Kamara, and Rukungiri Municipality party candidate, Ingrid Turinawe, among other leaders and supporters.
The day began with a procession through the streets of Rukungiri Municipality at around midday, after which supporters converged at Rukungiri Playground for the official program. However, soon after the gathering started—and just as participants finished singing the National and the Kigezi Anthems—the weather suddenly changed.
Drizzle set in, and supporters used plastic chairs as makeshift shields, as most could not fit under the tents. When Kamara concluded his remarks, the rain intensified. As other district party leaders prepared to speak, strong winds swept through the grounds, worsening the situation.
The stage where the leaders were seated started shaking under the force of the wind and rain, prompting them to flee and seek refuge in their vehicles, according to our reporter at the scene. The master of ceremonies paused the event as supporters attempted to hold the stage and tents firmly in place to prevent them from collapsing. The launch had not resumed by the time of filing this story at about 2:30 p.m.
