Looking at the Vacancy announcement advert for Uganda Insurance Regulatory Authority in the New Vision of 19th May 2025, I was filled with sympathies to the many innocent Job applicants who would waste their time and small money to apply for a Job in that Organisation.
Pity to all those little applicants who will be subjected to a biased selection process! Uganda Insurance Regulatory Authority is an organization that is always advertising for jobs in numbers similar to those of a sales’ or casual laborers’ organization.
I have made as many applications as the Job offers but never have I been shortlisted for even aptitude despite meeting all the job requirements. Sadly, at no time have I been informed about what is happening to my application.
When I carried out some background search, I was overwhelmed by the high level of nepotism at Uganda Insurance Regulatory Authority and this gave me the perfect answer to many of my unanswered wonders.
The top bosses at IRA recruit mainly if not only relatives for the advertised jobs. If you are not a brother forget of getting a chance, not a son or daughter to a brother or sister forget, not a wife of a brother also forget, not a son to a close friend you need also to forget.
For sure, a big percentage of staff at Uganda Insurance Authority are either blood-related or interrelated to the top EXCO. The very few staff who are selected on merit only serve to cover up the trail of nepotism. I even wonder how other staff cope with such working atmosphere.
Worryingly, I was astonished to learn that one of the top bosses at IRA has reduced all his Managers and the Board to submissive spectators. He does whatever he wants with limited or no checks and balances.
At such altitude of freedom and authority of the big boss, Uganda Insurance Authority is witnessing unprecedented financial mismanagement characterized by not only inappropriate but lavish and patronized spending.
This organization started experiencing a dark age especially after the enactment of the Insurance Act of 2017 which converted the ED’s then contract, and indeed the contracts of other employees, to an automatic first term contract under the new act.
This is the time when one of the top bosses started to assume absolute authority over staff and indeed the Board. The dark situation was exacerbated in 2021 by the re-appointment of the same powerful manager, through a very easy process, for his second and final term under the new act.
He is remaining with one year on his contract and the UIRA has to brave through this long period of continued mismanagement. In the same way students used to misbehave when completing a term of study in what was known as “Term Egenda n’Ebyayo”, it remains to be seen what further damage will be inflicted on UIRA in the remaining period of exit of some of these powerful men in charge.
This period is however, long enough for these men to bring down the Authority. I call for an urgent intervention to investigate one of these big men over his open nepotism and mismanagement before UIRA is run down. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
