At least 21 members of a gang operating in the suburbs of Arua Central Division, Arua City, have been arrested following a security operation on Tuesday. The suspects, aged between 13 and 21 years, were apprehended by uniformed and plainclothes officers from their hideout after a tip-off. They have been charged with robbery under CRB A/CRB 514/2025.
According to Arua City Police, late last month in Obolokofuku Cell, one Giduno Rogers Wamono Ismail, a scrap business owner, was attacked by about 20 youths armed with pangas, knives, arrows, and clubs at around 2:00 pm. The suspects stole a Techno Spark mobile phone valued at Shs 800,000, cash totaling Shs 2,000,000, and caused damage to his Toyota Hilux (Reg. No. UAK 162Z) by smashing the windscreen. The victim was also injured during the attack.
At the same time, David Innocent, a worker at the business, was robbed of a Techno mobile phone worth Shs 65,000 and Shs 370,000 in cash. Police were alerted immediately, but the suspects had fled the scene. Investigations led to the arrest of one gang leader, Mansur Drani, who revealed the identities of his associates. Acting on this information, the OC Operations of Arua Central Business District and police detectives raided a hideout in Baruku Cell on Tuesday evening, arresting 21 gang members while others fled.
The arrested suspects include: Ramathan Habib, Farid Bluetooth, Baraka Obama, Miraj Arafat, Drasiku Fahad, Wadri Mudasir, Twaha Khemis, Asiku Bashir, Fire Kun Sina Makosa, Mawa Bashir, Ajobe Kassim, Khemis Taban, Issa Noor, Alema Jafar, Sudaisi Nasa, Iddi Gift, Junior Ibrahim, Ali Sabotage, Ramathan Abib, Twalib Omar, and Jafat Halid.
Jimmy Anguyo, Police Spokesperson for West Nile, said six of the suspects have previously been arrested on similar charges but continue to commit crimes after release. He added that the gang, which has been terrorizing residents in Obolokofuku Cell, will be screened and forwarded to court as investigations continue.
Police note that earlier this year, operations in Arua City led to the arrest of dozens of suspected gang members, but numbers have risen again, coinciding with school holidays.
