Residents of Nyakabande Sub County in Kisoro District have held a demonstration over the sorry state of the Chapa-Mutorere road. The residents argue that the 6-kilometre road has been impassable for many years without intervention by the district authorities.
After learning that Thomas Tayebwa, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, was attending a fundraising ceremony at St Mary’s Mutolere Catholic Parish, Kabale diocese, locals barricaded the road. They also dug a trench and planted banana tubers in the middle of the road in Kyapa trading centre.
Amos Maniragaba, one of the users, says that the road has been impassable for about 8 years. He says sorry that the state of the road, which is full of potholes and big stones, hampers effective transport from the area to Kisoro town.
During the protest, police from Kisoro police station arrested Godfrey Maniraguha Rukara, district councilor representing Nyakabande sub-county and three others whose identities were not known for leading the protest.
Later, Robert Tukamuheebwa, Kisoro Deputy Resident District Commissioner and Abel Bizimana, Kisoro District LCV Chairperson, calmed down the angry locals.
They promised to follow up on the matter with the government. Tukamuheebwa also ordered police to release the arrested people-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
