Uganda’s U-17 Women’s National Team, the Teen Cranes, were on Tuesday crowned champions of the 2026 CECAFA U-17 Women’s Championship after defeating hosts Tanzania 3-0 in the final to complete a remarkable unbeaten campaign.
The victory saw Uganda finish the tournament with an outstanding record of five wins from five matches, 26 goals scored, and no goals conceded, underlining the team’s dominance in the regional competition.
Justine Ayerango opened the scoring in the 38th minute before Brenda Nassaka doubled Uganda’s lead four minutes later. Flavia Yagala added the third goal shortly after the restart in the 47th minute as the Teen Cranes comfortably overcame the hosts to lift the trophy.
The triumph adds another chapter to Uganda’s growing success in women’s football and comes at a time when the country continues to invest heavily in youth development. The championship also serves as a significant boost for the team ahead of future continental and global competitions.
Uganda entered the final as favourites after an impressive run through the tournament. The Teen Cranes had topped their group before eliminating Kenya 3-0 in the semi-finals, displaying both attacking flair and defensive solidity throughout the championship.
Head Coach Sheryl Ulanda Botes praised her players for their discipline and determination, describing the title as a reward for months of hard work and preparation.
“I am extremely proud of these girls. They showed character, commitment, and maturity throughout the tournament. Winning the championship unbeaten and without conceding a goal is a reflection of the effort they have put in and the belief they have in one another,” said Botes.
She added that the success demonstrates the progress being made in women’s football development in Uganda and provides a strong foundation for future competitions.
Goal scorer Justine Ayerango, who broke the deadlock in the final, said the players remained focused on their objective from the start of the tournament.
“We came here with one mission, which was to win the championship for Uganda. Every player gave her best, and we are happy to have achieved our goal. This trophy is for all Ugandans who supported us throughout the tournament,” Ayerango said.
The striker noted that teamwork and unity were key factors behind the team’s impressive performances.
FUFA President Moses Magogo congratulated the players and technical team for bringing glory to the country, saying the achievement reflects the federation’s commitment to youth football development.
“This victory is a proud moment for Ugandan football. The players, coaches, and support staff have demonstrated what can be achieved through hard work, proper planning, and investment in youth development. We congratulate the Teen Cranes for this outstanding achievement,” Magogo said.
He added that FUFA will continue to support youth football programmes aimed at producing competitive national teams for regional and international competitions.
The Teen Cranes’ triumph is expected to further strengthen Uganda’s reputation as one of the leading forces in women’s football within the CECAFA region. Their campaign was characterised by an attacking style of play, disciplined defending, and consistent performances that left opponents unable to find the back of the net.
