Derrick Ssetuba, the National Unity Platform (NUP) aspirant for the Buyaga East parliamentary seat, is currently being held by police at Kabalagala over allegations of fraud. According to Luke Owoyesigyire, Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Ssetuba is accused of obtaining UGX 8 million by pretenses from one Namara Omuhereza.
Over the weekend, pictures of Derrick Ssetuba circulated on social media, showing him with supporters led by MP Derrick Nyeko, who claimed Ssetuba had been violently abducted by unknown individuals near Lugogo in Kampala. “Comrade Ssetuba was violently abducted this morning at Lugogo. Just last week, we stood together visiting Masaka Prison to check on Comrade Eddy and others. This criminal regime thrives on kidnappings, torture, and impunity,” Nyeko said.
He added on X (formerly Twitter): “It is killing our security institutions and burying the rule of law. We will not be silenced. We will not be intimidated. We demand his immediate release and an end to this state-sponsored criminality.” However, police have debunked the abduction claims, stating that Derrick Ssetuba was lawfully arrested. “Two more victims have since come forward after learning of his arrest. The allegations against him will be diligently investigated, and the case file will be forwarded to the Office of the Resident State Attorney for perusal and advice,” Owoyesigyire said.
Before his arrest, Ssetuba was competing for the NUP ticket to contest the Buyaga East parliamentary seat, currently held by Erick Musana Acaali of the NRM, who recently lost the NRM flag to Stephen Twesige.
