Since the official start of parliamentary campaigns on Monday, leaders of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Arua City have joined members of the campaign taskforce for the party’s Arua Central Division parliamentary candidate, Jackson Lee Atima, to hold rallies in his absence.
The Electoral Commission (EC) officially opened campaigns for parliamentary and local government candidates on Monday, following the harmonization of campaign programs across the country. In line with the approved program, the NRM campaign in Arua Central Division was launched in Awindiri Ward by city party officials led by Zoe Bakoko Bakoru, the NRM Chairperson for Arua City. She was accompanied by other party leaders and members of the campaign team.
Party officials said the incumbent MP, who is seeking re-election, is currently away on official duty but is expected to return soon to join the ongoing campaign activities in different wards of Arua Central Division.
On Wednesday, the campaign team held two rallies in Mvara Ward, where Atima was represented by his Campaign Manager, Ahmed Miria, who delivered the candidate’s messages highlighting his achievements and plans for the next term.
While speaking to Uganda Radio Network after the rally, Miria said Atima would join the next campaign program as he is already returning from official duty. He added that the candidate continues to enjoy public support due to his performance in the previous term.
If re-elected, Atima plans to tackle youth unemployment by establishing a skills development centre targeting young people, while also empowering women through livelihood programs. These, he says, will be among his key priorities in the next term.
Atima, who won the seat in the 2021 general election, is among six candidates nominated by the Electoral Commission to contest for the position. His rivals include Ronald Debo, who lost to him in the NRM primaries and is now running as an independent; Muzaid Khemis, the current Arua Central Division Mayor contesting on the FDC ticket; Jackson Obindu of the NUP; and former Arua Municipality MP Kassiano Wadri.
