Police in the Kiira region are holding Rodgers Anjoga, a contestant for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag in Southern Division, Jinja City, over allegations of election-related violence. Anjoga was arrested Tuesday evening during a campaign procession in Loco Cell, Southern Division, after violence broke out between his supporters and those of his opponent, Faruwa Kitakule. The clash, which lasted nearly an hour, left several people injured and property destroyed.
Eyewitnesses say the violence escalated when supporters from both camps engaged in fistfights. A tricycle (commonly known as a tukutuku) that was reportedly transporting Anjoga’s supporters was torched, and several vehicles and motorcycles were pelted with stones, prompting residents to call the police.
Police officers led by Jinja Central Divisional Police Commander David Kamugira responded to the scene and sealed off the area before arresting Anjoga. Kamugira also ordered the arrest of Henry Oloya, a journalist attached to Bridge FM, who was covering the events. Both Anjoga and Oloya were detained at Jinja Central Police Station and charged with fueling election violence.
In his statement, Anjoga said he was conducting a peaceful door-to-door mobilization campaign when he was alerted by a resident about an attack on her son by a gang of youths. He claims that shortly afterward, stones were hurled and screams for help rang out, forcing several residents to flee. Anjoga said he took refuge in a nearby house, believing his life was in danger.
However, he expressed shock when Commander Kamugira, whom he had hoped would come to his rescue, ordered his arrest instead. Meanwhile, journalist Henry Oloya explained that he had received a phone call from a colleague alerting him about the chaos in Loco Cell. Upon arriving at the scene, Oloya recorded sound bites from residents, but was later confronted by police. Although he presented his press ID, Kamugira allegedly directed his arrest before he could explain his presence.
Kiira Region Police Spokesperson James Mubi confirmed the arrests, noting that both suspects recorded statements in connection with the charges. Mubi said they have since been released on police bond, pending further investigations. He also warned political candidates against inciting violence, cautioning that such acts not only disrupt public order but may also lead to the loss of lives and property.
