Kap Hassan Fungaroo, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party’s Northern Uganda regional coordinator, has dismissed claims made by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party that FDC is “dead” in the Acholi sub-region. Fungaroo made these remarks on Wednesday during a press conference at the FDC Kitgum District Branch office in Kitgum Municipality.
“The NRM government is spreading propaganda that FDC is dead in Acholi, but this is far from the truth,” Fungaroo said. “We are stronger than ever, and our support base in Acholi remains solid.” These comments come following recent defections of key FDC leaders from Acholi, such as Anthony Akol, the Kilak North Member of Parliament, and Michael Lakony, the Amuru District Chairperson, to the NRM party.
However, Fungaroo downplayed the significance of these defections, asserting that they would not address the underlying issues affecting the Acholi people. “The defections are a mere storm in a teacup,” Fungaroo remarked. “They will not weaken our resolve to fight for the rights of the Acholi people. In fact, these defections will only serve to escalate the problems facing our people.”
Fungaroo also expressed confidence that these defections are only temporary and that the former members would eventually return to FDC. His sentiment was echoed by Morris Santo Oyo, the FDC Kitgum District Chairperson, who reaffirmed that FDC’s presence in Kitgum is stronger than ever.
Oyo further explained that FDC would welcome back any members who choose to rejoin, emphasizing that joining and exiting the party is voluntary according to the FDC constitution. Fungaroo reassured FDC supporters in Acholi that the party remains committed to its core values of justice, equality, and democracy.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to promote the interests of the Acholi people and to hold the NRM government accountable for its actions,” he said. Despite the recent defections, Fungaroo expressed confidence that FDC will continue to be a dominant force in Acholi politics, and the party’s support base in the region remains significant-URN.
