Muslims in Luwero have been urged to remain steadfast in demanding accountability for Muslim projects. The call was made on Sunday by Sheikh Swaibu Kanatta, the Head of Dawa under the Kibuli-based faction in the Greater Luwero Muslim District.
Sheikh Kanatta’s remarks came during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations at Kwagalana Mosque in Luwero Town Council. He expressed his satisfaction with the transparency surrounding fundraising efforts, noting that every contributor is issued a receipt. He said the practice of issuing receipts is essential, emphasizing that it not only promotes trust but also encourages more community members to contribute, knowing that their donations will be used appropriately.
The Sheikh further highlighted the importance of accountability in the management of funds, especially considering the ongoing reconstruction work at the mosque. He said they must ensure that all the money is accounted for and that their collective efforts are to lead to tangible results that benefit the community.
He further stated that accountability goes beyond financial transparency, noting that it also encompasses the moral obligation of leaders to act in the best interests of their constituents.
Sheikh Kanatta told the faithful that when they hold leaders accountable, they empower themselves, and that they can collectively ensure that their investments in the community yield positive outcomes. He also asked local governments to emulate this kind of accountability.
Denis Sekabira, the Member of Parliament for Katikamu North, echoed these sentiments, urging the community to maintain their commitment to integrity and ethical conduct, the way it has been during the sacred month of Ramadan.
Sekabira said accountability is not just about money, noting that it is about actions and commitment to one another as a community. He told Muslims to support one another and let accountability guide their actions, ensuring that they uphold the values of honesty and responsibility-URN.
