All students of Muntuyera High School Kitunga in Rwashameire Town Council, Ntungamo District have been suspended following a violent strike at the school earlier this week. The strike, which began on Monday, was sparked by students demanding the immediate transfer of the school’s Deputy Head Teacher, Isaac Bagatuzayo, whom they accuse of harassment.
Anonymous letters were reportedly pinned in the dining hall, with students vowing to strike until Bagatuzayo is removed from the school. On Thursday, district education and security officials visited the school to intervene. After a closed-door meeting with the school administration, the officials attempted to address the students, but were met with resistance.
The rowdy students, who had already vandalized school property, maintained that they would not back down until their demand was met. The situation prompted the authorities to order all students to vacate the school premises. When contacted on Friday, Peace Atamba, the Ntungamo District Education Officer, confirmed the mass suspension, noting that the students have been sent home until further notice.
Efforts to get a comment from Isaac Bagatuzayo were unsuccessful, as all his phones remained switched off by press time. A teacher who preferred anonymity revealed that Bagatuzayo has gone into hiding after receiving open threats from students, including death threats-URN.
