The Mt Moroto regional police have issued a warning to the public against misusing social media and putting political campaign posters on road signages during the ongoing political season. According to police, some individuals, particularly youth, have been creating political arguments in WhatsApp groups, which can escalate into security threats.
Mike Longole, the Mt Moroto regional police spokesperson, urged the public to be mindful of what they post online and to respect others’ views. He said police are closely monitoring groups such as the Napak Development Forum, Napak Politics, Moroto Marble City, and Moroto Hardcore Politics, among others.
“Such arguments can lead to fights and destruction of property, and we will not sit idly by,” Longole warned. Longole also raised concerns about political agents covering signposts and road signage with campaign posters, obstructing road users. He emphasized that road signs exist to convey critical information and that intentionally covering them is a criminal offense.
He called for cooperation between political agents and security personnel to ensure peaceful rallies. Agents of presidential candidates were urged to share their movement plans with police for guidance on safe campaign conduct.
For Moroto district, police have designated Naitakwae grounds for all presidential campaign activities. Longole warned that no campaign processions would be allowed in congested areas such as hospitals, markets, and schools where security could be compromised.
He further stressed that hate speech targeting opponents is prohibited, as it can escalate into violence. Longole called on the public and candidates to adhere strictly to rules and regulations governing political campaigns to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
