Police in the Savannah Region have launched investigations into a fatal road crash in Luwero District that is believed to have been caused by reckless overtaking. The crash occurred at Yandwe Village in Butuntumula Sub-county, about 70 kilometres along the Kampala-Gulu Highway within Luwero District.
Investigations indicate that a white Toyota Land Cruiser, registration number SSD 299AD, was travelling from Kampala towards South Sudan behind a sugarcane truck when its driver allegedly attempted to overtake.
During the manoeuvre, the Land Cruiser collided head-on with a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UFH 520S, which was travelling in the opposite direction from Gulu towards Kampala.
The motorcycle rider, identified as Steven Anuwaine, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Luwero General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police recovered both the Land Cruiser and the motorcycle and towed them to Luwero Central Police Station pending mechanical inspection.
Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima said the vehicles will undergo technical examination as part of the ongoing investigations.
He added that a post-mortem examination had been conducted at Luwero General Hospital mortuary, while investigators continue to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
The latest fatal accident comes at a time when police have repeatedly warned motorists against dangerous overtaking, speeding and other forms of reckless driving, which remain among the leading causes of road crashes on Uganda’s highways.
The Kampala-Gulu Highway, one of the country’s busiest transport corridors, has in recent days witnessed several fatal crashes, prompting renewed calls for stricter adherence to traffic regulations-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
