Ofwono Opondo has made his maiden speech on Wednesday as an MP and he used that chance to destroy Wakiso woman MP Betty Naluyima of NUP who tried to lie on the floor of parliament while contributing to the debate on Dennis Namara’s proposal to have the LoP elected by all opposition MPs and not NUP only.
Naluyima said that the LoP should be left to be chosen by NUP since it’s the biggest opposition party since even the prime minister and vice president aren’t elected in the same manner.
Ofwono Opondo asked to say something and Thomas Tayebwa allowed him saying he is full of wisdom because he is an old man representing older persons in parliament. Ofwono Opondo took Naluyima back to school and told her to stop telling lies in broad day light.
As NUP MPs like Mulyanyama shivered, Ofwono Opondo said the prime minister and VP are subjected to approval of parliament in the appointments committee and plenary where all MPs, including those from NUP, are able to have a say in their appointment because they can refuse to approve them and send the names back to the president.
Namara in his proposal is demanding that MPs have a say in how the LoP takes office because the money he uses is from the consolidated fund which is the tax payers’ money. This is the same as what happens when the prime minister and vice president are being processed to occupy office.
Sebina Gyavira, who replaced Mpuuga in Masaka, made his NUP bosses happy when he opposed the proposal on grounds that Namara can’t claim to speak for the opposition MPs from other parties when he hasn’t consulted any of them. Sebina asked the speaker to show him any opposition MP who supports the proposal by Namara and there was none.
Ofwono Opondo took to the microphone and proposed that we vote to see if majority MPs want Namara to be given leave or not. Majority voted yes and the speaker congratulated Namara and asked him to get the support of the attorney general to go ahead and bring his bill for its first reading. Anna Adeke the FDC whip tried to put up a fight to defend the NUP’s LoP, but the speaker Tayebwa used deputy attorney general Jackson Rwakafuzi to shut her up.
Naluyima’s NUP was at the end of the day silenced and they seemed not to have any plan B strategy to counter the NRM and PLU side. All NUP MPs like Mulyanyama and Zambali now can do is to go on radios and TV and cry foul there and give corridor interviews while pretending to curse NRM, like Lutamaguzi used to do, yet they promised to fight for the opposition NUP cause.
The foot soldiers who voted them expecting them to fight for the party’s rights inside parliament are the losers because Zambali is back at NBS to host barometer where his story started from. This shows he has realized its the only thing he can do to remain relevant in the eyes of his voters because he has no plans to ever speak and shine on the floor of parliament.
