The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, in collaboration with Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Uganda, has launched the Land Laws Awareness Week in the Bugisu and Sebei sub-regions.
The campaign, running from August 24 to 30, is aimed at promoting public awareness on land, housing, and urban development rights, strengthening tenure security, and improving citizen engagement with government institutions.
Dorcas Okalany, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, said the awareness drive is part of efforts to bridge the information gap between communities and land management institutions. “This week is about empowering citizens with knowledge of their land rights, enhancing transparency, and improving access to legal and technical support in land-related matters,” Okalany said during the launch.
The week long activities include community dialogues, radio talk shows, legal aid clinics, exhibitions, capacity building sessions, and engagements with District Land Boards and Area Land Committees. Stakeholder meetings will also be held to encourage collaborative land governance.
Josephine Akia Luyimbazi, the Country Coordinator of PELUM Uganda, emphasized the need for inclusive and participatory approaches in land use planning and decision making, especially in rural areas where disputes over land ownership and usage are common.
The campaign is being implemented across several districts in the Bugisu region, which include the districts of Mbale, Sironko, Bulambuli, Manafwa, Bududa, and Mbale City as well as in the Sebei region, covering Kapchorwa, Kween, and Bukwo districts.
The initiative is supported by local governments, civil society organizations, and traditional institutions. Residents have been urged to participate actively in the scheduled events to better understand their land rights and responsibilities.
