Police are investigating a reported shooting involving a woman driver near the residence of Speaker on MacKinnon Road in Kampala.
The incident occurred on Thursday and was confirmed by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson , who said one person was injured and that investigations are ongoing. She noted that police are actively tracing the victim but did not provide further details.
According to security sources, the suspect is believed to be a bodyguard attached to the Speaker’s convoy. The officer allegedly shot at a woman who was inside her Toyota Harrier after accusing her of failing to give way to the convoy.
Internal accounts within the security forces acknowledge that the shooting took place, although it remains unclear whether any arrests have been made. There are also concerns among some officers that cases involving high-profile officials may not always be fully pursued.
The incident adds to a growing list of violent road altercations involving security personnel. In December 2024, VIPPU officer Charles Bahati fatally shot mini-truck driver Julius Ssemwaka along Sezibwa Road in Kampala following a dispute in which the driver reportedly refused to yield to a convoy at a traffic bottleneck.
Earlier, in January 2022, a UPDF soldier shot Police Constable Robert Mukebezi after finding him towing a military vehicle that had been involved in an accident. In May 2023, Police Constable Ivan Wabwire shot dead Indian national Uttam Bhandari near Parliament Avenue after a brief altercation, an incident captured on CCTV footage.
Experts have linked such cases of misconduct among security personnel to factors such as poor working conditions, low pay, and limited access to regular mental health support.
