The National Resistance Movement leaders in Luwero district have embarked on a campaign to raise three billion shillings to construct party offices.
Luwero district was the epicenter of the National Resistance Army war of 1981-1986, which brought President Yoweri Museveni to power.
However, 39 years after the war, the party had no permanent offices and operated in a single rented room along Kiwoko road in Luwero town council.
A section of party leaders and supporters have been advocating for party offices, a museum and elevation of Kasana playground to a stadium in recognition of the area’s contribution to the war in vain.
But after years, the party may finally get an office after they purchased an acre of land at Naluvule village near Lukomera trading center in Luwero district along the Kampala-Gulu highway.
Ronald Ndawula, the LCV Chairperson of Luwero District, explains that in 2024, President Yoweri Museveni donated 300 million shillings towards the construction of the office, and it’s where a fraction of 150 million shillings that was secured to purchase the land for the project.
Ndawula said that upon getting the land, they have embarked on fundraising for more funds to construct the party offices, which require up to three billion shillings.
On Monday, the District NRM Executive Members unanimously resolved to transfer the party offices to the land and operate in the tent until they construct the permanent building.
Ambassador James Kinobe, the Commissioner of the NRM Electoral Commission, said that they are hopeful that with the support of well-wishers and other friends, the money will be raised in a short time.
Patricia Magara, the Chairperson of Luwero NRM Women’s League, said that the construction of the offices is part of the strategies to regain support after they suffered defeat to NUP Parliamentary and Local Government candidates.
Magara said that it was an embarrassment for NRM, which is in power, to fail to have offices within the district, which had been its base before the NUP scooped most seats in 2021.
“I am very excited that we have moved forward and embarked on the construction of the offices. We appeal to the well-wishers and friends to join us to ensure this is achieved,” Magara said
NRM registered the biggest drop in popularity in the 2021 general elections since it captured power in 1986.
President Yoweri Museveni obtained only 41,166 votes (27.94%), and his arch rival NUP Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu scored 103,782 votes (70.45%). The party also lost all four seats of Members of Parliament and several local government positions.
Since the party has embarked on several programmes to help regain support in the district ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Among other projects is committing funds to complete Luwero hospital maternity ward and the Local Government headquarters-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
