Leaders from West Nile and Northern Uganda have urged clergies to improve the infrastructure and appearance of the Omach Gwarwi Pilgrimage site in Pakech, Pakwach District, to match other prominent cultural and religious landmarks in the country.

Chief Omach, the first cultural leader to welcome missionaries and provide land for a mission center in Northern Uganda in 1910 at Pakuba, is remembered every 6th of March with a religious pilgrimage to his burial site, where Christians gather for prayers.

Robert Omito Steen, Vice Chairperson of the West Nile Development Association (WENDA) and LC5 Chairperson of Pakwach District, called on the church to design comprehensive structural proposals for the site to attract government support.

Gelayous Wathum Muswa-Ryan, the Prime Minister of Kaal Ker Kwaro Jonam, urged the Jonam community to embrace the gospel through both faith and actions, particularly by supporting the development of churches and memorial sites.

Catherine Mavenjina Akumu, Member of Parliament representing Older Persons in Northern Uganda, donated one million shillings on behalf of Grow Old New Alive and in Love (GANAL) to support the site’s development. She emphasized the need for improved infrastructure at the site.

Raphael p’Mony Wokorach, the Bishop of Nebbi Catholic Diocese, revealed that the church has opened an account for contributions towards the development of the Omach Gwarwi Pilgrimage site.

So far, about 4.2 million Ugandan shillings have been collected. He appealed to the public to contribute both financially and in kind to support the routine maintenance and development of the place.

As of March 6, 2025, the church had secured eight hectares of land for the pilgrimage site. Visible structures include concrete platforms with iron bars serving as a podium for clergy during events-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
