National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, has urged Ugandans to embrace unity, saying it is the only path to overcoming the country’s social and political challenges. While addressing supporters at Katosa Primary School playground in Kyenjojo District on Wednesday, Kyagulanyi said Uganda’s tribal diversity should be celebrated rather than used to divide citizens.
He decried the growing trend of people identifying themselves by tribe instead of embracing a national identity. “We may come from different tribes, but we are all Ugandans. We should look at each other as brothers and sisters,” Kyagulanyi said.
He also accused the current government of promoting tribal divisions as a strategy for political survival. He likened the situation to colonial times, when foreign rulers relied on divide-and-rule tactics to fragment African communities.
Kyagulanyi encouraged Ugandans to believe in themselves, reject intimidation, and speak with one voice against what he termed bad governance, corruption, and human rights violations.
Earlier in the day, he held a rally in Kyegegwa Town, where he told supporters that he envisions a free Uganda—one in which the rights of all citizens are protected and respected.
He pledged to intensify the fight against corruption and improve access to essential social services if elected president.
Gilbert Kaganda, an NUP supporter in Kyenjojo, told URN that he supports Kyagulanyi because he represents the ideas and aspirations of the youth. He urged Kyagulanyi to prioritise the fight against corruption and tribalism once elected president.
Unlike Tuesday’s events in Fort Portal and Kabarole—where Kyagulanyi was blocked by security from accessing some areas—his campaigns in Kyegegwa and Kyenjojo proceeded without obstruction.
