Leaders from Koboko Municipality and Koboko District in West Nile sub-region have asked General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the national chairperson of Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), to prioritise the fight against corruption which they say is the major factor affecting development service delivery.
The appeals were made by leaders while endorsing General Muhoozi for 2031 presidency at a time when executive members of PLU, an organisation that presents itself as a platform for citizens on responsible participation to strengthen governance.
While the leaders expressed support for ideas fronted by PLU officials on governance and development, they noted that corruption remains a major setback to achieving development plans as funds meant for service delivery are allegedly diverted by individuals for personal benefit.
Koboko North MP Musa Noah said Uganda needs a leader who can champion the fight against corruption and amplify government initiatives aimed at boosting the economy and development. The leaders also raised several development concerns in Koboko Municipality and Koboko District that require government attention to enable residents to access improved services.
Among concerns raised was the lack Health Centre IV facilities and the state state of Koboko Airfield which they said could serve as an alternative to Arua Airfield once it is upgraded to an international standard. They argued that such developments can be achieved if corruption is addressed.
The LC 5 Chairperson of Koboko District, Mambo Ashraf, said that health sector still needs improvement, adding that establishing Health Centre IV facilities would greatly improve health service delivery, as the district is struggling to provide some major services that require facilities of that level.
Mambo also urged the government to fast track the planned opening of industrial parks and establish factories that would boost the local economy and create employment opportunities for residents.
The NRM Director of Finance and Administrator, Hajjat Naham Medina, expressed confidence that the demands raised by Koboko leaders would be addressed by government, saying that there are plans to improve service delivery across different sectors.
Medina noted that a transition of government requires leaders who are like minded and focused on addressing challenges while considering plans set by the current government which she said would make implementation easier when change is realised in the country.
However, PLU General Secretary, Daudi Kabanda, acknowledged challenges facing the district in different sectors noting that improving the situation requires teamwork and capable leadership to ensure continuity in the transition from one government to another.
On corruption, Kabanda said that the best way to combat the vice is taking action against people who embezzle funds or misuse public resources mean for services to citizens through various sectors.
On calls to improve the state of Koboko Airfield, Kabanda asked leaders to work together and sensitise community members who have encroached on the airfield land to vacate the area peacefully to pave way for planned improvements.
Recently, Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama, visited the airfield and engaged community members and leaders asking those who had encroached on the land to consider vacating it peacefully as government plans to demarcate and develop the area.
Koboko leaders and residents endorsed General Muhoozi Kainerugaba and signed PLU the register, signalling their endorsement of his 2031 presidential bid. They also continued to appeal for peace, development and and end to corruption-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
