Kigezi HomeBoyz have sacked head coach Joseph Harold Mutyaba after a poor start to their first Uganda Premier League season since returning to the top flight. The club announced on Wednesday that Mutyaba had been relieved of his duties with immediate effect, with Kefa Kisala appointed interim head coach.
Kigezi HomeBoyz are currently bottom of the 18-team league table with one point from four matches. A club source told our reporter that Mutyaba was dismissed because of the team’s poor performance. The source said the club expected Mutyaba to improve the team’s tactical approach and results, but the team’s performances had fallen short of expectations.
Mutyaba joined Kigezi HomeBoyz in January 2026 on a two-year contract after coaching several clubs, including Soltilo Bright Stars, Tooro United, Onduparaka, Entebbe, Lweza and Masavu, as well as Malindi Sports Club in Zanzibar. He was appointed to strengthen the team ahead of its return to Uganda’s top-flight league.
Kigezi HomeBoyz earned promotion to the Uganda Premier League in May 2026, ending a 25-year wait for a club from the Kigezi region to return to the top flight. The region was last represented in the Premier League by Horizon FC in 2001. The club was later relegated and eventually collapsed amid financial difficulties. Kigezi HomeBoyz traces its roots to Kabale Sharp FC, which was founded by Owen Tumuhimbise in 2017 and competed in the FUFA Big League.
Tumuhimbise sold the club in July 2019, after which it was renamed Kigezi HomeBoyz FC under new ownership. The club spent several years trying to secure promotion before finally achieving the feat on May 17, 2026, when it defeated Blacks Power FC 2-0 at Al-Madinah Stadium in Kabale District to secure direct promotion.
Kisala now takes charge of a team struggling to adjust to top-flight football, with the immediate task of improving its results and lifting it from the bottom of the table. Failure to turn around its fortunes could see Kigezi HomeBoyz make an immediate return to the FUFA Big League-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
