Police in Kasese District are investigating the suspicious death of a 12-year-old boy after a post-mortem examination indicated that he may have been strangled before his body was found hanging inside his home. The deceased, identified as Dan Mumbere, a pupil and resident of Rwenguba Village in Bwera Sub-county, was discovered hanging from a window inside his room on Wednesday evening.

According to police, Mumbere was last seen at about 11:00 a.m. playing with other children in the neighbourhood. His father, Mbusa Sunday, and stepmother, Ithungu Sadress, had left him at home in good health, although he was known to have epilepsy and was on medication. When the couple returned home at about 5:00 p.m., they found the boy missing.

A search was launched, and later that evening a family member found him hanging from the burglar-proof bars of a window inside his room using a piece of cloth reportedly used for fetching water. Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson Elly Maate said officers, together with Scene of Crime personnel and homicide detectives, responded to the scene and commenced investigations.

Maate said the post-mortem examination revealed injuries consistent with strangulation, including blood clots around the neck, raising suspicion that the boy may have been killed before his body was suspended. Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the death to establish whether it was staged to appear as suicide or if another explanation exists.

“The death is being treated as suspicious, and investigations are ongoing to establish the motive and identify anyone who may have been involved,” Maate said. The body was taken to Bwera Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination as investigations continue-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
