Members of the Uganda Local Government Workers’ Union in Kasese have agreed to call off their industrial action and opted to pursue dialogue with the government over their main demand.
However, they say they expect the government to prioritize their demands; otherwise, they will have no option but to resume the strike.
On October 1st, the workers put down their tools, demanding equal pay for equal work without discrimination.
They argued that despite the government allocating Shs 8.5 trillion in the financial year 2025/26 wage bill, their salaries were not reflected.
Godwin Bihanikire, the General Secretary for ULGWU Kasese Chapter, said that following the union leaders’ meeting with the speaker of parliament, Anita Among, last week, they agreed to give three months to the government to respond to their demands.
He noted that on Tuesday, all government workers who joined the strike had returned to duty for this period as they dialogue with relevant authorities.
Baihanikire said the Speaker had acknowledged gaps in salary allocations, adding that they had been promised to be engaged in the budgetary process for the forthcoming financial year so that they too could contribute and present their opinions to the line committees.
Nickson Baluku, the Senior Assistant Secretary attached to Kasese District Local Government, warned that if the government doesn’t respond to their demands, they will still lay down their tools.
He also asked the government to prioritise the proposal for the creation of a national local government day to allow interaction between local government workers and policy makers.
