Joint security forces shot dead a suspected Karamojong warrior on Friday after an armed group attacked soldiers who were guarding the burial site of a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer in Kotido District.

The fallen soldier, Lance Corporal Francis Ilukol Lowak, was attached to the 57th Battalion under the 409 Brigade based in Arua. He was murdered by suspected armed Karamojong warriors on May 26, 2025, at around 11:00 PM in Kanalobae East, Kanalobae Parish, Maarus Sub County.

Following the incident, joint forces from the Lokitelaebu Army Detachment were deployed to secure the burial grounds. However, on May 30, at approximately 7:00 AM, a group of armed warriors—suspected to belong to the Jie clan—emerged and attacked the soldiers on guard in Kanaamwar Village.

The joint forces responded swiftly, killing one of the attackers and recovering an SMG rifle, registration number MB5966 (bolt carrier), along with 22 rounds of live ammunition and one empty magazine.

The deceased warrior was later identified as Achuka Aluuka, a resident of Kalemuarengan Village, Kotido Sub County.

Mike Longole, the Mt. Moroto Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He said the suspect was on a wanted list for allegedly masterminding several attacks across districts including Kotido, Napak, Abim, Agago, Kitgum, and Karenga. “We managed to put one suspect out of action while others fled the scene,” Longole said. He further condemned the attack on the burial site, describing it as a senseless act of violence.
