Alfred Ekongo, a driver for Kakise Bus Company, has succumbed to injuries sustained in a road crash in Soroti City that involved a pedestrian and the Kakise bus.
On Sunday, July 19, 2026, the Kakise bus, registration number UAS 159P, was involved in a fatal accident at Opuyo Trading Centre in Soroti City. The bus was en route from Soroti City to Kampala when it veered off the road and crashed into a bridge around midnight.
Ekongo passed away this afternoon at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where he had been admitted for several days following the accident. Tragically, he had lost both legs after the bus collided with the bridge.
Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred as a crowd gathered nearby to watch a World Cup football match. During this time, a group of young men became involved in a fight. As the altercation escalated, one of the boys attempted to cross the road and collided with the Kakise bus.
”The bus driver tried to avoid hitting the pedestrian but lost control of the vehicle before crashing into the bridge. The accident happened in front of many people here. We may not blame the driver; he was trying to avoid hitting a man who was being chased.”recounted a witness.
Colleagues at the Kakise Bus offices in Soroti, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed their shock at the incident, noting that this was the first accident Ekongo had been involved in during his over 30 years with the company.
”Ekongo was a very jolly man at work, and he loved his job. He was always careful whenever he was behind the wheel. We believe it’s God who has called him to be with Him,” one of his co-workers emotionally stated.
Ekongo’s body remains at the Soroti Regional Referral Hospital mortuary, where arrangements are being made for a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, the other passengers who sustained injuries are receiving treatment at various health facilities in Soroti.
Since the accident occurred, attempts to obtain an official report from the police have been unsuccessful-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
