Godfrey Muwumuza, a teacher at Kabojja Junior School who is facing charges of sexually abusing one of his male pupils, has been further remanded after his surety was found to have lied during the hearing of his bail application on Wednesday.
Things took a dramatic turn at Buganda Road Court before Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi when Regina Nakintu, a retail shopkeeper from Mirembe Road in Makindye Luwafu, claimed that Muwumuza was her biological brother.
However, the magistrate sought to verify the claim and cleverly instructed both the accused and his surety to write down the names of their parents. The two provided conflicting information, causing amusement in the courtroom and prompting laughter from those in attendance.
The discrepancy led the Chief Magistrate to question Nakintu directly.
He warned her that if she failed to tell the truth, she would be arrested and sent to the Court cells. Faced with the threat of consequences, which included being jailed, Nakintu confessed that the accused was not her brother and admitted she had lied to the court.
Nakintu’s confession threw the teacher’s defense lawyer into disarray, prompting an urgent request for a short adjournment to address the situation. “Your Worship, since Regina Nakintu has told the court a lie, I pray for a shorter adjournment to replace her as a surety,” the defense lawyer submitted, acknowledging the serious impact the false testimony had on the bail proceedings.
Kayizzi strongly condemned the dishonesty, emphasizing that many people are hired and brought to Buganda Road Court as professional sureties, but none can pass his test. Kayizzi then proceeded to further remand the accused teacher and adjourned the matter to June 18th, 2025, when the prosecution is expected to present its first witness, the mother of the victim.
The mother of the victim had appeared before the Court and was ready to testify as the first Prosecution witness in the fully packed courtroom. State Attorney Joan Keko was ready for the hearing, and she asked the Court to stop the media from publishing the name of the victim since he is a minor with a future ahead of him.
Muwumuza was arraigned before Buganda Road Court several weeks ago on charges of attempted aggravated homosexuality. According to court documents, he allegedly coerced the boy into touching his genitals during a school trip. The child, terrified, secretly messaged his mother via WhatsApp, which led to the teacher’s arrest.
Although police records contain a confession from the suspect, Muwumuza denied the allegations when he appeared in court. The Anti-Homosexuality Act prescribes the death penalty for cases of “aggravated homosexuality,” particularly where the act involves minors, persons with disabilities, or situations where drugs or alcohol may have impaired a person’s judgment.
Attempting to commit any offence outlined in the Act is also criminalised and, upon conviction, carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Recently, prosecutors filed new charges of indecent assault against a minor, citing a violation of Section 136 of the Penal Code Act. Under this section, any person who unlawfully and indecently assaults a boy under the age of 18 is guilty of a felony and, if convicted, may face up to 14 years in prison-URN.
