Police in Jinja City’s Northern Division are investigating the tragic death of 22-year-old Gladesi Nabankema, who is suspected to have died by suicide. The incident occurred on the morning of April 8, 2025, opposite the former Almca Hospital.
According to community members who spoke on condition of anonymity, Nabankema had been sharing a room with her younger sister. On that morning, she reportedly made a phone call to her cousin, Phiona, a resident of Magwa in Jinja City. After her sister had left for school, Phiona came to check on her and was devastated to find Nabankema’s body hanging, with signs indicating that she had taken her own life.
Phiona immediately alerted her mother, who rushed to the scene. In distress, she notified officers at Mafubira Police Station. Her cries for help attracted neighbors and other community members. The deceased’s parents were identified as Vincent Kigumbila and Annet Nalubo.
In a media interview, James Mubi, the Busoga East Police Spokesperson, confirmed that the police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. He acknowledged reports from neighbors who claimed the victim had recently expressed troubling thoughts, including statements that suggested she “might not be around anymore.”
Mubi emphasized the growing need to address mental health challenges, noting that emotional distress can often lead to unbearable suffering and a sense of hopelessness. He called for collective community action to offer support to individuals struggling with mental health, stressing the importance of listening and providing practical help.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim died by suicide. Magembe Badiru Sserugo, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairperson in Jinja Northern Division, encouraged residents to seek guidance and emotional support when dealing with challenges. He urged the public to speak up and engage with support systems, saying that early intervention can prevent such tragedies-URN.
