The Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, has emphasized the importance of integrating National Resistance Movement (NRM) values with professional ethics in schools to curb absenteeism, drunkenness, and corruption.
Speaking on Tuesday at Ntare School to over 1,142 secondary school teachers from Greater Mbarara undergoing an Ideological Orientation and Patriotism Development course, Nabbanja said essential values such as patriotism, socio-economic transformation, Pan-Africanism, and democracy, when combined with moral codes of conduct, provide teachers with ideological resilience that enables them to thrive as nurturers.
The teachers attending the course came from Lyantonde, Isingiro, Mbarara City, Mbarara District, Kazo, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, and Rwampara. The training is organized by the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps under State House.
Nabbanja encouraged teachers to love and cherish Uganda, serve it with pride, and view their profession as a calling. She also commended Uganda’s natural beauty and the leadership of President Yoweri Museveni, saying the country’s designation as the “Pearl of Africa” requires every citizen to protect the nation.
Hellen Seku, Commissioner at the Patriotism Secretariat, explained that the teachers are being trained on patriotic work ethics, financial literacy, the roles of teachers in nation-building, and political economics. She noted that financial literacy aims to reduce reliance on salaries and curb ongoing strikes for salary increments, particularly among arts teachers. Seku added that the training was necessary because many students are currently better informed about patriotism than their teachers.
Saul Rwampororo, Headteacher of Ntare School, expressed gratitude to the Secretariat, noting that the training came at a crucial time. “I would like to thank the Commissioner of Patriotism Seku for thinking about Greater Mbarara in a unique way by bringing this training. I believe it will positively impact both our students and teachers,” he said.
The Patriotism Secretariat was established by President Museveni in 2009 to equip youth with ideological skills, nurturing them into resourceful, responsible, disciplined, and resilient citizens capable of defending and transforming the nation.
