The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, has cautioned police officers against rushing to loan sharks whenever they have financial challenges.

Byakagaba said many police officers are currently trapped in the hands of money lenders and they risk losing all whatever they have.

According to Byakagaba, several police officers abandon the force savings and credit corporation association dubbed Exodus SACCO and go for money lenders and they’re now trapped.

Byakagaba appealed to Exodus SACCO board led by Senior Commissioner of Police Wilson Omoding to intervene and help police officers trapped in the hands of money lenders.

“Exodus SACCO is meant to minimize financial pressure on our personnel. We know our officers have financial insecurity but this can be minimized through saving with our Exodus SACCO. I think our SACCO needs to help these people trapped in the hands of money lenders because they can’t come out on their own,” IGP Byakagaba said.

Omoding said the Exodus SACCO has become a pillar of financial empowerment for subscribers. “We have expanded our product offerings, strengthened internal systems and enhanced service delivery ensuring that members receive efficient and timely financial solutions,” SCP Omoding said.

SP Eddy Ssekanjako, the Exodus SACCO Account Duty Free and Treasurer said they remain steadfast in their vision to transform the SACCO into a financially strong and member centric institution.

“It needs a collective effort in embracing good governance, and innovation accompanied by financial discipline. We aim at ensuring that all members derives tangible benefits from our SACCO while protecting the long-term sustainability of our SACCO,” SP Ssekanjako said.

Deputy IGP James Ochaya emphasized the need to save for retirement because many police officers find it hard to survive once they are shown exist after clocking the retirement age.

“We have several incidents where police officers keep calling and even coming here claiming they have not received their salary for six months. But when we check in our systems, we find they retired several months back. Tell me whether such a person can leave longer. They are a problem to society and to their families,” Ochaya said.

Assistant Inspector General of Police, Hadijah Namutebi, who is the current Chairperson of steering committee said police officers need to save as a way of preparing for a better life after police service.

“Exodus SACCO is not an option but a necessity to all police officers. As Chairperson of the steering committee I will ensure that everyone saved is protected and every load disbursed is fair,” AIGP Namutebi said.

Currently, Exodus SACCO has more than 40,000 subscribers-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
