State minister for lands Sam Mayanja is a rich man who co-owns Kampala Associated Advocates, KAA with other wealthy Ugandans.
KAA is one of the richest and most respected law firms in Kampala and president Museveni is one of their clients. Even the government of Uganda sometimes hires them to help prosecute difficult cases such as Kizza Besigye’s treason charges.
This happened in the late 2000s during the PRA rebel case and it may happen again even now once again in the court martial where the state prosecution team has so far been messy in trying to pin down Besigye and his man Hajji Obed Kamulegeya.
The law firm is located along Nakasero Road not very far from Gen Museveni’s state lodge Nakasero. The law firm owns land and buildings in that part of Kampala. It has some of the richest clients apart from president Museveni examples including Sudhir Ruparelia, the banks, telecom companies and international NGOs.
However, their headquarters in Nakasero where they moved to after leaving Workers House is to be demolished in which case owners, partners and their associates will have to operate in rented temporary premises somewhere within Kampala.
This is to pave way for the demolition of the current white house-like structure which they have been operating in at Nakasero. The place is going to be rebuilt and replaced with a more glamorous and larger structure to meet the firm’s growing corporate and upscale clientele.
This December could be the last month Mayanja’s colleagues are operating on the Nakasero old premises before demolition. In his case, Mayanja opted to step aside from KAA to avoid conflict of interest allegations. And that will be the case for as long as he remains a minister in the government of president Museveni with which the firm often does lawyering business especially at the level of the different MDAs.
