A major bridge connecting Bududa district to Manafwa and other districts has collapsed leaving residents stranded. Tsutsu Bridge was washed away after River Tsutsu burst its banks following heavy rains that lasted for over three hours on Tuesday.
The bridge is located at Buwangani town in Manafwa district along Manafwa Bududa circular road at the border of the Manafwa and Bududa districts.
People from Bududa district who use the only bridge to access other districts like Manafwa, and Mbale among others are stranded.
David Mukwasi, says that he has been left stranded with his motorbike since the rains have hampered transport. He said they have been blocked and can no longer receive food supplies from Manafwa because of the broken bridge.
He expressed his fears that the situation may worsen following the continuous rainfall.
Patrick Nabutanyo, the Bududa District acting Communications Officer says that they have written to the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and are waiting for their response.
Isaac Matanda the Manafwa District Speaker urged UNRA to expedite the rehabilitation of the bridge to ease the movement of people from within and outside the district.
He says that people from Namisindwa, Manafwa and other districts trading agricultural products like bananas, tomatoes, and animals among others from different markets at Bududa have been cut off.
Dinah Nakombi, the Manager of UNRA Mbale region says that a team has been dispatched to assess the damage.
