Gulu City Council has received over 72000 doses of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine as the government intensifies a mandatory mass vaccination campaign aimed at controlling and eventually eradicating the highly contagious livestock disease.

The vaccines were delivered on Friday to the City Council Veterinary Department by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) as part of the first phase of the nationwide vaccination exercise.

The campaign, which was launched in July, is being implemented under a cost-recovery arrangement, requiring livestock farmers to pay for vaccines administered to their animals.

Dr Edward Omaido, the Gulu City Council Principal Veterinary Officer, said a dose costs eight thousand shillings for cattle and pigs, while goats and sheep are charged four thousand shillings per vaccination cycle.

Dr Omaido urged farmers to register their livestock and cooperate with production and veterinary teams conducting the registration exercise across the city.

“Registration is ongoing, and farmers should look out for the Production and Veterinary teams visiting their areas. Endeavour to get your animals registered and thereafter pay for the required vaccines,” Dr Omaido said.

He said the current vaccination cycle will run until August 31, after which stricter livestock movement controls will be enforced.

From September 2026, Dr Omaido said, no susceptible animal will be allowed to move from one area to another without proof of vaccination against FMD.

The City Council Veterinary and Production departments have launched sensitisation campaigns calling livestock farmers across the city’s 32 wards to register before the end of the first vaccination phase.

FMD is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals, including cattle, pigs, goats and sheep.

Meanwhile, Gulu City Council has also received 47,388 kilograms of assorted seeds for distribution to farmers in Bardege-Layibi and Laroo-Pece divisions.

The seeds were delivered on Monday under the Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) Equator seed allocation programme to support farmers during the second planting season.

The consignment comprises 40,000kg of maize, 5,000kg of soybeans, 316kg of sunflower, 1,500kg of groundnuts, 72kg of sesame and 500kg of beans.

City officials said 3,741 farmers will benefit from the maize allocation, while 208 will receive soybeans, 158 sunflower, 30 groundnuts, nine sesame and 20 bean seeds.

Gulu Resident City Commissioner Ambrose Onoria, who flagged off the distribution, urged farmers to make good use of the second planting season to recover from poor harvests recorded during the first season.

Onoria encouraged farmers to use the opportunity to increase food production and strengthen household food security.

Geoffrey Akena, the Bardege-Layibi Division Councilor V, cautioned farmers against selling the seeds, urging them instead to plant the inputs and use them for their intended purpose. The distribution follows concerns from farmers over limited access to planting materials after a prolonged dry spell contributed to poor harvests during the first planting season-URN.
