The Government of Uganda has donated two vehicles to the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) to support its role in national development through traditional leadership. The handover took place at Kololo Independence Grounds during the launch of Uganda’s National Enhancement Program for Traditional Leaders.
The donation includes a luxurious official SUV and a double-cabin pickup designated for the cultural leader’s security team. The ceremony was presided over by Vice President Jessica Alupo, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering traditional institutions as vital players in grassroots mobilization, policy implementation, and socio-economic transformation.
“Cultural institutions remain pillars of identity, guidance, and unity in our society,” said Alupo. “By equipping our leaders with the logistical tools they need, we are reinforcing their capacity to reach communities and support national programs effectively.” Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot, the head of the Iteso Cultural Union, welcomed the donation as a major step toward strengthening the institution’s leadership role in cultural preservation and community development.
He acknowledged that the vehicles would address longstanding transportation challenges faced by the Union and enable wider outreach across Ateker communities in Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia. “This support reflects a renewed partnership between the state and cultural institutions,” Emorimor Emolot said.
“With these tools, we can enhance our outreach, protect our heritage, and ensure the well-being of our people through closer collaboration with government initiatives.” He added that the resources would help intensify efforts to mobilize the Teso region towards unity, productivity, and active participation in national development programs-URN.
