A former Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu-OBR royal guard commander has surrendered to security in Kasese District.
Joseph Kabalhami, 60 years, went into hiding in 2016 following a raid by the military and police on the palace of Rwenzururu King, Charles Wesley Mumbere, in which 100 royal guards were killed.
Kabalhami is said to have been the commander of the royal guards in the Greater Lake Katwe Sub-county. He was received on Wednesday by Zepher Mubingwa, the Deputy RDC in charge of Busongora County in Kalhamya village, Kahokya Sub-county.
According to Kabalham, he went into hiding on November 27, 2016, together with more than 70 royal guards. He says that the group sought refuge in the homes of their relatives for eight years.
Mubingwa asked all the GISO and Sub-county NRM chairpersons to profile all the people that Kabalami said had been reunited with their families after running from the palace during the security raid.
In 2023, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Jane Frances Abodo, withdrew all charges against Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere and 218 royal guards.
They were arrested in 2016 and charged with murder, terrorism, treason, malicious damage to property, attempted murder, and aggravated robbery following a security raid on Buhikira Royal Palace.
This is after the DPP said that it had lost interest in the case and was withdrawing all the charges against the accused persons.
in 2019, 87 Rwenzururu royal guards returned home following a protracted peace campaign in Kasese-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
