Five more people have been in connection with a suspected arson attack in Butebo district. This brings to eight the number of suspects arrested in connection with the incident. On Friday last week, unknown individuals set fire to three houses belonging to 50-year-old Edirisa Lipoto, a peasant from Sogono B cell in Butebo.

The fire broke out while his wife, Zainabu Kayendeke, was away purchasing beans. The blaze destroyed all household property, including clothes, tables, chairs, and animals, amounting to millions of shillings. This also included 400,000 shillings, which was part of the government’s PDM funds.

Moses Kitiyo Mwanga, the Bukedi North Police Commander, reported that on Saturday, Peter Ojoko, Martin Okello, and Suzan A Tim, all residents of Kakoro Town Council, Butebo District, were arrested in connection with the incident. On Monday, five more individuals were arrested, but Kitiyo did not disclose their names to avoid jeopardizing the investigation, which could lead to further arrests.

According to Kitiyo, the five were arrested after being named in connection with the crime, along with the three individuals arrested on Saturday. The suspects are currently held at the Butebo Central Police Station as investigations continue. Police have stated that the motive behind the arson remains unclear. Notably, a similar fire incident occurred in the same village in 2020, destroying over 50 structures-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
