Residents of Akali Sub County in Kwania District have expressed excitement following the donation of a tricycle motorcycle ambulance to Akali Health Centre III. The ambulance, valued at 10 million shillings, was donated by the Rotary Club of Kira to help reduce maternal and child deaths in the area by improving emergency referral services.

Millicent Bulafu, the President of the Rotary Club of Kira, said the decision to donate the ambulance was prompted by persistent public outcry from the Akali community over inadequate emergency transport for expectant mothers and critically ill patients.

Daniel Patrick Opio, the in-charge of Akali Health Centre III, welcomed the donation, describing it as timely. He noted that the facility had been struggling to refer emergency cases to Aduku Health Centre IV due to a lack of transport means.

Godfrey Maxwell Otucu, the LCIII Chairperson of Akali Sub County, urged men to take expectant mothers to government health facilities instead of relying on Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), warning that TBAs pose serious risks to both mothers and babies.

Juliet Opito, a resident of Abongo-Abati village, expressed joy over the donation, saying it would help address the health service delivery gaps in the area. Linda Alweny, another resident from Alangi village, Alel Parish, said the ambulance is a lifesaving gift for mothers and their babies.

Akali Health Centre III, located in Telela in Akali Parish, was established in 2007 as a dispensary. It was later upgraded to a Health Centre II in 2013, and in 2021, it attained the status of a Health Centre III. The facility currently conducts about 100 deliveries per month and serves an estimated population of 12,000 people from Akali Sub County and the neighbouring districts of Kole and Dokolo-URN.
