The Democratic Front (DF) Party President, Mathias Mpuuga, has appealed to Ugandans to embrace tolerance and respect for divergent political views during the ongoing campaigns ahead of the 2026 General Election. Speaking at a party mobilization meeting held at Kiyumba Trading Center in Nyendo–Mukungwe Division, Masaka City, Mpuuga cautioned against acts of violence arising from political differences.
He noted that while there is a visible public desire for political change in the country, political actors should use persuasive and peaceful means rather than violence to win support. Mpuuga urged grassroots supporters and candidates to avoid confrontational politics as they canvass for votes, emphasizing that political competition should not breed hostility among communities.
Drawing an analogy to family life, he said contradictions can be managed amicably without resorting to conflict.
At a broader level, the DF President expressed concern over what he described as a “campaign of blackmail” among some opposition candidates, warning that such actions weaken their collective goal of challenging the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
He advised opposition parties to harmonize campaign messages that build hope and unity among their supporters instead of indulging in intrigue, character assassination, and internal divisions.
In recent months, the Democratic Front leadership has engaged in public exchanges with counterparts from the National Unity Platform (NUP) over differing strategies for challenging the incumbent, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Uganda’s 2021 General Elections were marred by violent confrontations between opposition supporters and security forces, leading to several deaths and injuries — a scenario Mpuuga urged all actors to avoid as the country prepares for 2026.
