The Directorate of Crime Intelligence (DCI) has recovered a gun that has been used in several armed robberies in Mukono Central division since Christmas period.

DIC director, Brig Gen Chris Damulira, decided to deploy operatives under Flying Squad Unit who collaborated with Mukono police until the gun was recovered.

Operatives first arrested several suspects who revealed that their ringleader is Ivan Stephen Wagube, a resident of Lukojjo village, Mpoma Parish, Nama Sub-county.

Security team led by the suspects apprehended Wagube and subjected him to interrogation until he confessed.

“It is true I keep the gun in my ceiling. We have used it to rob many people in Mukono town and other villages. We target mobile money operators, wholesalers and farmers who have earned from agriculture produce,” Wagube reportedly said.

After this confession, Wagube led a team of seven police officers and Flying Squad operatives to his home in Lukojjo village and he was directed to climb into the ceiling. He removed the gun hidden in a sack.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, said Mukono division has experienced a surge in aggravated robberies, prompting a series of arrests and interrogations by the flying squad and crime intelligence.

Onyango explained that on March 2, 2025, nine suspects were arrested along Bombo Road in a white Noah vehicle with registration number UBR254E. He described the recovery of the gun as breakthrough in combating criminal gangs that have been terrorizing residents.

“The breakthrough came after arresting the ringleaders and recovering a gun allegedly used in various robberies. A team of intelligence and flying squad officers searched the home of Wagube. The search yielded a rifle hidden in a ceiling in a sack, along with a digital UPDF uniform, a UPDF jacket, and housebreaking implements,” Onyango said.

Security said the rifle is currently undergoing forensic examination, as it’s suspected to have been used in multiple robberies in Mukono division and surrounding areas.
