Ugandan long-distance runner Mathew Chepkwurui claimed a second-place finish at the Enschede Marathon held in the Netherlands on Sunday, April 13. The promising marathoner clocked a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 46 seconds, finishing behind Kenya’s Patrick Kiter Kiplagat, who won the race in 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 34 seconds.
Djibouti’s Ronald Cockx took third place with a time of 2 hours, 21 minutes, and 15 seconds. Chepkwurui kept pace with Kiplagat for much of the race, staying neck and neck until the 39-kilometre mark when the Kenyan broke away with a strong sprint to the finish. Chepkwurui maintained his pace to secure a solid second-place finish.
Speaking to Uganda Radio Network (URN) via WhatsApp, Chepkwurui said the result was an encouraging sign despite his short preparation period. “I am happy that even with the little training I did, I was able to secure second position,” he said. “The time I posted shows I need more training to improve. I was targeting qualification for the World Championships, but it didn’t work out.”
His coach, Addy Ruiter, commended the performance, describing it as a good indicator of Chepkwurui’s potential and a guide for enhancing preparations ahead of future competitions-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
