The Prime Minister of Busoga Kingdom, Joseph Muvawala, has issued a directive prohibiting cabinet ministers, Busoga Lukiiko representatives, and all staff from engaging in partisan politics, warning that such involvement fosters divisionism within the cultural institution.

In his statement, Muvawala emphasized that as a cultural entity, the “Obwakyabazinga bwa Busoga” aims to unify people from all political backgrounds. He stressed that there should be no space for political divisions within the kingdom.

“I would like to remind you that as we gear up to the 2026 electoral period, you are reminded that the Obwa Kyabazinga bwa Busoga is a cultural institution that brings together all people within its geography and area of mandate irrespective of political ideology or belief,” reads his letter.

Muvawala further instructed Busoga kingdom staff to refrain from contesting or endorsing politicians through their positions within the kingdom.

“All cabinet ministers of Obwa Kyabazinga bwa Busoga and other persons serving in the direct structures of the kingdom are hereby prohibited from direct promotion and participation in partisan politics while still holding their respective portfolios,” the letter stated.

However, Muvawala acknowledged that it is a constitutional right for any registered voter to participate in electoral processes. He advised Busoga kingdom staff who wish to run for political office to resign from their current roles by April 30, 2025. Meanwhile, Veronica Kagoya, the kingdom’s Youth and ICT Affairs Minister, has resigned to contest for the Kamuli Woman MP seat.

Kagoya praised the kingdom for allowing her a decade of service to the young people of the region.

However, Kagoya’s resignation has sparked controversy, particularly with incumbent Kamuli District Woman MP, Rebecca Kadaga. Kadaga has openly accused some members of the kingdom of directly supporting Kagoya’s bid, despite the cultural institution’s nonpartisan stance.

Kadaga asserted that she played a crucial role in the restoration of the Busoga Kingdom and the enthronement of Gabula Nadiope IV as the Kyabazinga. She accused what she termed as “corrupt” individuals within the kingdom of sponsoring Kagoya and others to undermine her political position.

Kadaga alleged that these individuals, whom she described as powerful “mafias,” were financing certain kingdom ministers and staff to weaken her efforts in service delivery for the region. She also accused them of trying to politically undermine her to gain control over the kingdom’s resources.

In response to the accusations, Kagoya denied any wrongdoing. She stated that her decision to enter politics was driven by a desire to better serve the people of Kamuli, not to challenge existing political structures within the kingdom-URN.
