The head of the Buruuli Cultural Institution, Constantine Mwogezi Butamanya, has urged youths to contest in all elective positions to have a say in decisions that shape the country’s future. The Electoral Commission has outlined the following election timelines: Nomination for Local Government positions, including Special Interest Groups, will occur from 3rd – 12th September 2025.
Nomination for Parliamentary Elections will take place from 16th – 17th September 2025. The Presidential nomination period will be held from 2nd – 3rd October 2025. As a result, many aspirants are already beginning early campaigns ahead of the official nominations by the Electoral Commission and political parties.
Speaking at the Youth Leadership Conference held at his palace in Kibira Village, Nakasongola Town Council, on Thursday, Isabaruuli Mwogezi Butamanya called on the youth to seize the opportunity to contest for elective positions. He emphasized that youth participation in politics is crucial for influencing the development of their communities.
Butamanya also noted that political involvement would enable the youth to preserve the cultural values of the Buruuli Cultural Institution and advocate for its autonomy. “Historically, the youth have been called the leaders of tomorrow. However, when leadership opportunities arise, they should embrace them and gain experience,” he said.
Sam Kigula, the LC5 Chairman of Nakasongola District, also addressed the conference, advising the youth to avoid election-related violence, as it could negatively affect their careers and even lead to loss of life. He further encouraged them to take advantage of government wealth creation programs to create job opportunities for themselves rather than relying solely on government employment.
Godfrey Ssengonge, a youth from Kalungi Sub-County, expressed his support for Isabaruuli’s message and shared that he had already declared his intention to contest for the position of area councillor at the district council.
However, other youth, including Steven Kasirye and Harriet Nakate, expressed concerns about participating in elective politics due to the high costs associated with campaigns. Kasirye pointed out that while the youth have the necessary academic qualifications for many elective positions, the lack of funds for campaigning prevents them from running.
