The Archbishop of Gulu Archdiocese, the Most Rev. Bishop Raphael P’Mony Wokorach, has cautioned Christians against seeking solutions from witchdoctors, urging them instead to turn to God, whose guidance is freely available.
Speaking to thousands of pilgrims from the dioceses of Gulu, Arua, Nebbi, Lira, and others during the Marian Shrine celebration held on May 3, 2025, at Iceme Catholic Parish in Oyam District, Archbishop Wokorach emphasized that faith is a precious gift that must be cherished, nurtured, and strengthened through prayer and unwavering trust in God, even during challenging times.
He encouraged believers to seek divine guidance rather than turning to village “consultants” when faced with difficulties such as sickness, unemployment, and social conflicts.
Cue out: …is for free.”// The Archbishop also commended the increasing participation of women in both Church and public life and called on men to similarly engage more actively in these important spaces.
Meanwhile, Archbishop Emeritus John Baptist Odama described this year’s impressive turnout of pilgrims as a clear sign of growing faith among Christians.
Alfonse Ojok, Vice Chairperson of the Pastoral Council of Anyeke, expressed optimism that the number of pilgrims to the Iceme Marian Shrine would continue to grow each year, noting that the journey to the shrine is associated with healing and blessings.
The Iceme Marian Shrine traces its origins to 1942 when Fr. Pyeko, a Comboni Missionary Priest, arrived in Iceme Te-Okic. He was welcomed by Mzee Opye Barikia, who generously donated land for the establishment of a Catholic chapel. Initially, Fr. Pyeko conducted prayers under a tree and appointed Antonio Ongoda as the first catechist to guide the local congregation.
By 1954, the community had made significant progress, leading to the construction of a semi-permanent church. During this period, Arwata Jinno succeeded Ongoda as catechist, continuing the mission of faith and service in the area-URN.
