The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni, has called on teachers across Uganda to return to schools and resume their duties, emphasizing the importance of education for learners and national development.

Her message was delivered on her behalf by State Minister for Higher Education, Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, during the 8th graduation ceremony of Fort Portal College of Health Sciences in Fort Portal City on Friday. In her statement, Janet Museveni acknowledged the concerns raised by educators but stressed that dialogue remains the best way to resolve disputes.

The call comes three weeks after teachers under the Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) began a nationwide strike over salary disparities and poor working conditions. The industrial action has disrupted the start of the third term in many schools, raising concerns about how candidates will prepare for their final examinations.

Minister Muyingo praised the graduating students for their resilience and commitment to health service, urging them to uphold the values of their profession once they enter the workforce. He assured the graduates that the government is committed to improving health infrastructure and providing all necessary resources to support their work.

A total of 889 students graduated with diplomas and certificates in various health-related fields during the ceremony at the college campus in Fort Portal City. According to Kate Commander, the institution’s principal, 346 of the graduates were female, while 543 were male.
