The Commander of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) 3rd Infantry Division, Brigadier General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, has been promoted to the rank of Major General.

The promotion was announced through a radio message issued by the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, which cited Maj Gen Sserunkuma’s longstanding loyalty and outstanding contributions to peace and security efforts in Uganda and beyond, dating back to the days of the National Resistance Army (NRA).

The message recognized his key roles in Uganda’s liberation struggle and his sustained service under the UPDF across various operational theaters.

Maj Gen Sserunkuma previously served as Deputy Division Commander of the 2nd Division based in Mbarara, where he oversaw security operations in Greater Western Uganda.

He also participated in Operation Iron Fist, a military campaign targeting the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Northern Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Later, he was deployed in peacekeeping and enforcement missions in Somalia and South Sudan, contributing to Uganda’s regional security commitments.

Maj Gen Sserunkuma also served as Commander of the 405 Brigade in Kotido District, where he was tasked with securing North Karamoja up to the borders with South Sudan and Kenya.

He was subsequently appointed Deputy Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division based in Moroto, before rising to Division Commander, a role in which he led pacification operations across Karamoja Sub-region, ensuring peace and stability in Greater Eastern Uganda.

His promotion comes as the UPDF continues to restructure and strengthen its command leadership to address ongoing security challenges in the region.
