A section of women in Oyam District have welcomed the newly launched rural broadband network, saying it will enhance digital access, particularly for women in underserved areas. The network was launched on Tuesday, May 21, 2025, by the Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET) as part of an initiative to boost digital inclusion in rural communities.
The broadband network is expected to benefit women-led farmer groups, schools, health centers, and small businesses by improving internet access, which has long been a challenge in the region. Women who spoke to Uganda Radio Network expressed optimism that the improved connectivity will empower them with educational resources, business opportunities, and access to vital online services, driving socio-economic development in the district.
Miriam Atoo, the LC1 Chairperson of Nursing Quota in Western Ward, Oyam Town Council, commended WOUGNET for its efforts to bridge the digital divide in rural areas like Oyam.
Jenifer Gutu, a resident of Oyam District, expressed relief over the launch, noting that it would significantly reduce her costs on internet data.
WOUGNET Executive Director Sandra Aceng said the rural broadband project is part of a broader mission to bridge the digital gender gap by making internet connectivity affordable and accessible to marginalized communities.
Oyam Resident District Commissioner, James Shilaku, said strengthening marginalized communities through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) opens up greater opportunities. He urged WOUGNET to go a step further by equipping residents across sectors with digital skills.
Meanwhile, the LC3 Chairperson of Oyam Town, Stephen Okello, cautioned residents on the responsible use of digital technologies.
