A house belonging to Josephine Kizito Kyaterekera in Kasana-Kavule village, Luwero Town Council, was completely destroyed by fire on Wednesday night at around 9 PM. The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit, following weeks of erratic power supply in the area.
Josephine was at home with her grandchildren and her daughter, who had traveled from Kampala for a visit. The family had been sitting in the living room by candlelight, waiting for power to be restored, when Josephine’s daughter heard a spark coming from the bedroom.
Upon checking, she found flames engulfing the room. Despite their efforts to extinguish the fire with sand and water, the flames spread rapidly. Josephine’s daughter rushed to Kasana Police Station to report the incident but was redirected to Luwero Central Police Station (CPS).
At CPS, she found a water bowser, but there was no driver available. By the time the police arrived—two hours later at 11 PM—the house had been reduced to ashes. Family members attribute the fire to persistent power fluctuations in the area over the past three weeks, where electricity has been turning on and off frequently, possibly leading to an electrical short circuit.
Savannah Regional Police spokesperson, Sam Twiineamazima, was yet to provide an official statement on the incident-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
